The long awaited update
After setting up this site at least six months ago and then promptly abandoning it, I've finally managed to make some edits. I learned how to label a specific element in the .html file such as a line of text or an image (ie, class="centered"), and then create a layout rule for it (and anything else with the same label) in the css style sheet. As much as I hate the idea of AI chatbots doing things for me that I know how to do myself (writing, brainstorming, etc), I will admit I would not have been able to make the aforementioned edits without AI -- at least not as quickly, anyway. The chatbot also showed me how to fix elements to the bottom of the page, center them, etc, although I struggle to remember all the command terms and have to look them back up and/or copy /paste them constantly.
I realize that at this point, learning html is about as forward-thinking as learning to churn butter, but if nothing else, this project has already given me some insight into how complex coding is. (Not that I'm under any illusions that what I'm doing is complex, but direct experience -- even at a beginner level -- gives me a frame of reference.) If it hadn't been for this project, I also wouldn't have discovered the life-changing power of CTRL+SHIFT+R. (Before I learned that pro tip, there were lots of frustrating why the hell isn't that change I just made showing up?! moments.)
Anyway, for anyone with social media fatigue (me), I'm sold on the value of the indie web as an alternative means of creative expression online. Now I just have to figure out what I might actually want to create or express. Maybe some pictures of my lunch?
